My Projects Overview
I have completed numerous projects as part of my bachelor's and master's degrees, hackathons, professional organization associations, and on my own over the years. Below is the list of all such projects categorized into appropriate themes.
Applications of GIS and Remote sensing in Urban Planning
Modeling Urban Growth Scenarios and Risk assessment for Envigado, Aburra Valley, Colombia
Socio-vulnerability assessment and mapping of Envigado by building a methodological approach and appropriate rationale for each chosen socio-economic indicator.
Modeled urban growth scenarios for the city of Envigado for the year 2030 and developed alternative urban development plans which mitigate the impacts resulting from the urban growth scenarios.
Evaluated the alternative plans in terms of their social and environmental impacts in relation to the modeled urban growth scenarios.
Assessing the solar energy production through rooftop solar installations in Enschede, The Netherlands
Analyzed the importance of why energy transition is required from non-renewable to renewable sources and evaluated different renewable sources relevant to Enschede, The Netherlands.
Assessed the potential of Enschede to produce electricity through rooftop solar installations following a custom methodology and specific assumptions.
Developed a web application giving details about each building of Enschede like how many panels can be installed, how much power can be produced, the investment required, and how much CO2 can be reduced by producing electricity through solar.
Assessing sustainability of the city of Enschede using a list of indicators built on basis of a sustainable development framework
Built a sustainability framework for the context of Enschede city by applying theoretical concepts.
Using primary and secondary data, an assessment of the sustainability of the city Enschede was made using appropriate indicators according to the developed framework and criteria.
Spatial and statistical methods were used to analyze and compare the dynamics and geographical patterns of sustainable urban development.
Selection of suitable solid waste disposal site for the municipality of Chinchina, Colombia
The aim of the project is to provide the planning authorities a list of new areas within the municipality for their new solid waste disposal based on a list of criteria set as per their environmental and planning guidelines.
Identified areas suitable for waste disposal site development by constructing a series of spatial criteria maps.
The final site was suggested for solid waste disposal by integrating all the specified criteria and also checking the aerial capacity and accessibility to the site parameters.
Influence of urbanization of a city on its vegetated area. Case study on the city of Enschede, The Netherlands
Analyzed how the urbanization of Enschede city replaced the vegetated area with concrete surfaces over the years.
Statistical analysis was performed to identify the pattern of replacing the vegetated area with concrete surfaces.
Urban sprawling analysis of Hyderabad, an Indian city
Performed supervised classification on 5-year interval Landsat data from 1990 to 2015 and categorized each pixel into one of the five classes - water, urban land, open land, vegetation, wetland.
Created an accuracy assessment contingency matrix for classes and calculated overall accuracy of prediction and kappa coefficient.
Built a multiple linear regression model using the five developed classes and population to predict future urbanization as well as the land cover of different classes.
Analysis of Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect in Ahmedabad, India city
Studied urban heat island effect for the city of Ahmedabad using Landsat imagery by calculating land surface temperature (LST) and vegetation using NDVI parameter derived from DN values.
Analysis was made to check the urban heat island effect for the city over the past 2 decades and discovered that the UHI effect over the city is increasing at an alarming rate.
Field survery project
Mapped the terrain of an ancient Harrapan civilization site named Dholavira in the state of Gujarat, India using different surveying equipment's like Total station, Auto Level, Real time kinematic (RTK) and Terrestrial laser scanning.
Estimated the volume of reservoirs, mapped the drainage network, structure of the citadel area using data points collected through different surveying equipment using ArcGIS.
The land where displaced people settle
The challenge is to characterize the land cover/land use at informal settlements of displaced populations using NASA satellite datasets. We designed an approach that characterizes the vulnerable populations at informal settlements by defining various parameters for specific geographies and visualizing the data to understand the living conditions. The pitch included:
Business model
Revenue source
Roadmap for the project
Freight Transport analysis & visualization
The project's purpose is to offer market trends in domestic freight movement of USA to a startup so that it can decide what modes of transportation and types of freight to begin its operations with.
Through data analysis and visualization tools like Flourish & Tableau insights have been provided on (i) which transport modes should they invest in? (ii) which freight category and commodities should they consider? (iii) which origin-destination pairs should they focus on for combinations of different transportation modes and freight categories.
Individual assessments and user testings were conducted to test the usability and applicability of the visualizations in order to better understand how users feel about them and improve them.
Master Thesis Overview
An analysis of small business' flood mitigation behavior in Kampala, Uganda.
The research aims to understand the behavioral impacts on decision-making for planning better interventions and policies to withstand the recurrent floods and keep businesses afloat during the time of crisis.
To goal is to get a better understanding of the flood mitigation behavior of Medium, Small, and Micro Enterprises (MSME's) and find the most influential factors affecting it in three selected case study areas of Kampala, Uganda.
A modified version of the Protection Motivation Theoretical (PMT) framework relevant to businesses is proposed in the research which showed positive outcomes and can act as a guiding framework for other similar studies, especially in the African city context.
Conceptual framework of the thesis: Modified PMT framework for businesses.
Civil Engineering Projects
Experimental studies on properties of concrete mixed with iron ore tailings and copper slag
Performed field experiments to understand how the workability and strength of concrete is varying with different compositions of iron ore tailings and copper slag.
Estimated the optimum percentage of iron ore tailings and copper slag that can be replaced with natural aggregates for maximum workability and strength of the concrete mix.
Review of energy efficient technologies for control of emerging pollutants in water bodies
Addressed the global water quality challenge due to new and emerging pollutants which have serious threats to human health and ecosystems.
Gave an overview of all the present technologies to tackle emerging pollutants with their advantages, disadvantages and suggested some recommendations concerning challenges in their treatment.
Drinking water treatment plant design project
The design project involves submitting a brief plan with all the necessary calculations and different plant elements with dimensions that are required to set up a functional drinking water treatment plant in a city. The chosen case study area for this project is Hyderabad, India.
The project involves estimating the per capita water demand for the city as well as designing appropriate rapid mixing tank, flocculation tank, sedimentation tank, rapid sand filter, disinfection and chemical house.
Design of a 5-storey building consisting of RCC structure with masonry infills
Designed a layout and build SAP model for analysis.
The projects include all the aspects of construction and project management such as cost estimation, survey, load calculations, SAP model, foundation design, beam design, column design, slab design and, staricase design.
Sociology Projects
How is tourism affected by the bifurcation of states? A story of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
The impact of state bifurcation on the tourism industry, both socially and economically was investigated.
In terms of statistics, foot print, and marketing by respective governments, a brief overview of the state of tourism before and after bifurcation was also given.
Highlighted the government efforts in an attempt to attract more tourists to the respective states and why few of their efforts were highly criticized.
Recommendation and suggestions were provided regarding improving tourism in the respective states.
Mapping Technology and Society: A case study of Palaj village, Gujarat, India
The project's goal is to help participants learn how to conduct research, conduct fieldwork, engage with the public, build people-centric survey forms based on the problem's chosen frame, and propose solutions that are appropriate and accepted by the group.
Multiple extensive fieldworks were carried out to better understand the community issues and identify the most prevalent one that the majority of them were facing.
Created a survey form and gathered data from a wide number of people in the community who might be able to assist us in finding solutions.
After reviewing the collected data and performing some desk research on the most feasible solutions that fit the local context, recommend suitable solutions for the problem.
